This Hip High Slit in Tartan is My Whole Personality
I have too many thoughts about how incredible the first V&A Scotland Fashion Now event in Dundee was. So, while I digest all of that, let me show you my outfit, and more specifically the little detail that just felt so perfectly me, and especially "Subtle Harlot".
I wanted to represent the Highlands with this black tartan kilt from Prickly Thistle, and before I picked it up I had paired it with this handmade leopard print dress in my mind. But when I tried it on at first it just didn't have the same edge as I imagined. The slit was more subtle and the kilt was worn a bit too conventionally. It just looked like a dress with a kilt on top 🙄
I then destroyed my wardrobe for an hour, trying on every other combination I could think of but nothing was IT.
I was determined not to buy anything new but I was also starting to lose my mind.
Somehow when I came back to the first outfit, in a moment of lucidity, I managed to work out the drape and the gathering with the kilt pin in a way that worked and gave me the drama that I had envisioned. I didn't wrap the first part around my waist at all, instead I let it hang loose down to my ankle.
When I styled it on the actual night I took some time to get the placement just right, so that when I put my leg forward the fabric fell to either side.
I also ended up tweaking the front panel to be even less modest. My friend said that now the fun thing about it is it really has no cover-up function at that point, making it more scandalous.
The boots looked great with the outfit, the points complimenting the long tail of the kilt, but I stupidly travelled all day in them.
"They're comfortable, it'll be fine!"
