Subtle Harlot

Object 003 - N.010 : Nostalgic 90s School "Cakes"

This is part of a series as I document the life of a dress worn and lived in, in one real life, in the Highlands of Scotland. Object 003: Highland Mess Dress

It's the Tattie Holidays here. Historically, children would be off school for the tattie (potato) harvest. My parents generation could get paid for working on the harvest, but fortunately for me, it was just a break. And now with my own kids, it's more of a case of trying to keep them entertained without spending too much money on indoor activities!

Yesterday we made some old style "cakes" that were common at school events in the 90s and 2000s. They are still around today but I feel like they were more common when I was younger.

We started with Marshmallow hats. Although we had to make ours upside down cause the cups were just a little too small. Did marshmallows get bigger?? They are pretty simple. Melted chocolate in the cup, push the marshmallow in, then a blob of melted chocolate in top with a smartie. Smarties were much more vibrant when I was a kid. My sister used to get so hyper off the blue ones that she wasn't allowed any for a while 😄

Every stain on this still hurts me to do. It's like I just get used to it looking a certain way, then have to take a risk that the next stain will change it in a way I can't stand and will cause me to give up on wearing the dress.

Chocolate and smarties.

I also have a few events I want to wear the dress to soon, but it'll be around more people and oooft, it is testing my confidence! But I shall persist in the name of art 🫡

We also made chocolate cornflake and rice krispie marshmallow "cakes". I can see why these were a hit with mums in the 90s. We whipped up so many in a short period of time, with no waiting for them to cook.

And here's a current look at the dress. It's fairly coming along!
