Subtle Harlot

Object 003 - N.008 : Muddy Puddles

This is part of a series as I document the life of a dress worn and lived in, in one real life, in the Highlands of Scotland. Object 003: Highland Mess Dress

This project is really testing my comfort with looking weird in public.

Normally when I go out on my bike in any rain, I'll have my waterproofs on and be quite comfortable the whole time. But cycling in a big stained skirt, flapping around in the wind, soaked through, makes me feel like a fanny.

I reminded myself ITS ART as I got stares from the people I let pass me on this muddy road. At least I'm not doing the kind of art that requires shitting in a bucket in a glass box in some gallery for a month.

This is mud, to be clear.

It poured with rain for my entire 40 minute journey. My leggings underneath were also drenched and my thighs stung from the cold. Water was dripping in round the edges of my hood and running down my neck. I had to stop to wipe off my glasses many times. The tape that keeps my tube in place on my face was starting to peel away. It was pretty miserable.

So then, of course, as soon as I arrive the sun comes out.

I was a bit nervous about going out in the rain, and worried that it would ruin some of the more delicate stains, like the mushroom prints or the little Irn Bru speckles. But my courage was rewarded with this awesome Irn Bru flavoured waterline, right under where my jacket coverage ended.

And what kind of Highland representation would my dress be if it hadn't been subject to a good soak in the Scottish rain?
